OBSESSED

By Jennifer Loiske

I saw him again this morning. He was standing at the far corner of the schoolyard, alone, as always. People passing by were giving him curious, even inviting looks, but he ignored them all. I’d tried not to look but there is something so tempting, so different about him that I can’t seem to control myself whenever he’s around. I find myself staring at him in the strangest situations, and no matter what I do or how hard I try, my eyes always seem to find him, only to realize that he doesn’t give a crap about my longing stares.

My friends call him a weirdo, and in a way they’re right, as he’s the most exotic creature we have ever seen in Derricks Lake. Unnaturally pale, watching the world with his bright-blue eyes, his black hair as shiny and silky as a raven’s feathers. Yeah, I call him raven boy and I’m obsessed with him.

I leaned on my locker, my eyes half closed, my lips slightly parted, and my thoughts full of him. I’d never spoken to him. Not once. Maybe I was afraid it would spoil the illusion, or maybe it was just that he seemed so out of this world that approaching him would be a crime against some higher power. But I wasn’t completely clueless, oh no, as in those few months he had been here I’d managed to dig out his name. Sebastian. I smiled dreamily. Even his name had a sound like an angel choir. My fingers flew to my lips and I sighed.

I vaguely noticed someone crashing next to me but didn’t let it disturb my daydreaming. Not until that someone coughed quietly. I turned, royally annoyed, and was prepared to snap something nasty, but the words died on my tongue when my eyes met the intruder’s.

His eyes looked much bluer this close and his perfectly sculpted, deep-red, totally kissable lips were turned up into an amused half-smile.

“Hi,” he said.

I stared at him, unable to speak. My cheeks flashed bright red, my mouth opened and closed like I was a dying fish on dry land, and my knees slowly turned to jelly. The corner of his lips twitched.

“Hi,” I managed to blurt out. Oh-My-God! He was even more stunning than I had thought and my fingers itched to touch him. I put my hands behind my back. Just in case.

“I’m Sebastian.” He smiled and I’m pretty sure I felt the earth quake.

“I know,” I breathed. Idiot! I mentally smacked myself and was sure this unearthly creature would turn on his heels and walk away, as I had just made a complete fool of myself, and certainly not in a good way but in some awkward stalker kind of way. So not cool!

“Ah-hah.” He grinned wickedly.

I closed my eyes, trying to calm myself and get the red flames to disappear from my cheeks. Okay, I breathed, and turned to him relatively serenely. But when I opened my eyes he was gone. Not far though. He was standing across the hallway, his eyes laughing at me while he talked with another girl.

I was confused. As far as I could tell he had never talked to anyone before, so why now, why today, and especially why me?

Help authors to help and grab a copy of Paranormal Love here. All proceeds go to the cancer unit in Sussex, England!

Helping Teens with Epilepsy

IMG_0347Rogue House and Authors For Charity has been helping teens with epilepsy since 2013 by sponsoring the activity club for teens with epilepsy. A big part of Jennifer Loiske’s royalties along with all royalties of Authors For Charity go to charity. The reason why the activity club has been chosen a part of their charity is that they think it is just as important to help teens with disabilities to go out and do normal things, than to help them medically. Sometimes things that are obvious for a healthy kid, such as friends, going to the movies, participating in parties, can be quite challenging for someone who differ from the others.

So bringing these teens together, helping them find friends and supporting their act of becoming independent has been Rogue House and Authors For Charity’s way of bringing a hint of magic into someone’s life. To show, they matter, and that there is life ‘outside of the four walls’.

So thank you, reader, for making this possible! Every time you buy a book published by Rogue House, you are helping us to help.

9781291306019_p0_v1_s260x420Authors For Charity will also donate all profits coming from their book, Tales of an Old Wizard, to Children’s Epilepsy Unit, in Turku University Hospital, Finland, until their second book, Paranormal Love, is published. After the publication the charity will be changed to help a cancer unit in Sussex, England.

Blood Master

Blood Master; final coverBlood Master by Jennifer Loiske

(age 18 and up readers)

Part Three of Immortal Blood Series.

In the hands of a master vampire no one is safe…

Sometimes a girl has to do what a girl has to do. Even if it means siding with the devilish master vampire, who obviously has some anger management issues. But how far can you go before you lose yourself completely? Where is the line that you cannot cross? Can your enemies be turned into your friends? Can the hunted become the hunter? To survive, Samantha has to face the challenge of her life, but will she ever be safe again?

The fast-paced finale of the Immortal Blood Series that will keep you nailed to your couch until the very last page!

Excerpt:

A light, satisfied smile was playing on his lips as his eyes moved from man to man, woman to woman, as if he were a general inspecting his troops. All of them stared straight ahead, with their backs straight and eyes full of emptiness.

Finally, Jason let go of my shoulder and spoke. “Brothers. Sisters. Today is a day of joy. Today is the day when you will have a new sister. A sister that will continue Lucas’s work as my protégée.” He drilled his eyes into them and made sure everyone understood exactly what he was saying. When they lowered their heads murmuring ‘aye’, he continued. “Today is the day when Samantha Catherine Green will learn the true way to be a child of the darkness.”

I wanted to scream hell no, but I knew my only way to survive at his hands was at least to try to do whatever he wanted me to do and think about the consequences later.

“Bring me the servant,” said Jason.

Before I could react I saw someone leading a young girl towards us.

“No,” I breathed.

True, a second ago I had been prepared to do whatever it took to keep Jason happy, but I hadn’t known he would drag me into his devilish games this fast. I thought I had time to prepare and at least create a decent conspiracy against him. Maybe even write ‘Sam’s handbook of surviving the impossible’ or something like that, but forcing me into his cruel world this fast was just malicious. He’s Jason, a small voice said inside my head; what else did you expect? I gritted my teeth. I had no idea what I had expected but certainly not this.

I stared at the girl and shook my head. “No,” I breathed again, as I had a pretty good hunch about what would happen next.

Jason ignored me completely. “Colleen,” he said, his voice like a caress.

“My lord.” The girl curtseyed.

Jason took her hand and lifted it to his lips. His eyes were gleaming and I swore there was a hint of red in them. I couldn’t turn my eyes away from him. I wanted to. I did. But I just couldn’t.

Slowly, he turned her hand, revealing the pulsing veins on her soft wrist. “Here,” he said, turning his eyes to me and smiling slightly, “we drink straight from the vein.”

I felt my mouth get wet. Gross, I know, but I couldn’t help it.

“Here,” he said, revealing his fangs, “I am the master.” He sank his teeth softly into her wrist, not drinking, just making her blood flow. “Samantha.” His voice was pure velvet. “Drink with me.”

I swallowed and stared at the wrist. He moved it closer to me. My eyes widened and my mouth opened slightly. My fangs ached and without even noticing I touched her wrist.

The air around felt heavy but the girl didn’t seem to be afraid of us. On the contrary. She seemed eager and quite willing. I pressed my fingers to my lips and tasted the blood on them.

Jason’s eyes were on me. “Drink,” he urged gently.

But something in his eyes made warning bells ring in my head and I couldn’t make myself do it. I let my hand drop and took a step away from him. I almost waited for him to grab me and force me to drink, but instead he just smiled and pressed his lips to the girl’s wrist. His eyes never left me. Not even when his fangs pierced her flesh again and he drank the blood she so willingly offered.

I couldn’t look at him anymore so instead I looked at the people around us. They weren’t staring ahead anymore. They were staring at the girl before me and they looked hungry.

When Jason was done he licked the blood from his lips and quickly grabbed my hand, and before I knew it his hand was on my neck, pressing my mouth to the girl’s wrist.

“If you want to survive, you must drink now,” he whispered, so quietly I doubt anyone else heard him.

A sound, half cry, half sigh, escaped from my mouth. I knew he was right but I still couldn’t make myself do it.

He pressed his mouth to my ear. “You promised to obey me, did you not?”

I nodded.

“This,” he hissed, his breath hot on my face as he let his lips rest on my skin for a while, “is not obeying. Drink.”

I pressed my eyes closed. This is your life now. Suck it up, I ordered myself. An image of Dane flashed into my mind but I quickly pushed it away. Forcing my eyes open I turned my head slightly. He stared right into me. Tears stabbed the back of my eyes but I couldn’t give him the pleasure of seeing me cry. So I glared daggers at him and smiled scornfully.

“Yes, sire.”

Gabriel, Blue eyes. What readers say about Blood Master:

5***** This entire series is a WOW!

Blood Master is about vampires but has such a human touch. The author has a way of writing paranormal that feels normal. She has quite the grasp on how to do it well and in an compelling way. This is not my genre of choice but what I have discovered is if a book is done well it doesn’t matter what category it falls under. These stories have a way of grabbing you in and at the same time absorbs your consciousness that all you can think about is the story. That is what a great writer can do. Pull you in and take you to another time and possibly an entirely different dimension. I have read this series with great anticipation and this last book exceeded my expectations. I love the natural dialog and the easy flow to the storyline. There is something familiar and soothing though I haven’t quite figured out what it is. I guess you can call it a gift in which I am the receiver. In this case, Miss Loiske’s readers are too.

This book entertained me all the way through. It was an escape that was pure fantasy which I loved. The characters are intriguing and the storyline uniquely mesmerizing.

Excerpt~

“He backed away a tad, his eyes holding mine, and for a moment I was sure he would do something rash like kiss me passionately, but instead he let his fingers run down my sides, closing his eyes and inhaling deeply.
“Samantha.”
I stayed as still as I could.
“I don’t know if I should kill you or kiss you.”

Sam; Club Number Five5 ***** Addictive series!

Another amazing book. This time we see Sam getting into trouble as usual but now being forced to live with Jason it turns her little troubles into life and death situations, not only for her but for others around her. It is inspiring to see such a strong female character. It is a shame that the series has ended i would love to see more of Sam and the gang.

5 ***** Sam faces her demons!

A cup winning hat trick for Jennifer Loiske with star striker Sam hitting the winning goal. The entire Immortal Blood series has been box to box action with the latest offering a fitting conclusion to a crescendo of blood, danger and fragile teenage emotions. Sam faces the ultimate master vampire and “Sire” Jason doesn’t disappoint with smouldering good looks blended with the volatility of a volcano waiting to explode. Our star doesn’t know whether to trust a new mentor/guard, but chooses right in the end. And with the introduction of Kieran comes a new string to Sam’s bow as she learns how to take responsibility for the destiny of others … her closest friends among them. Blood Master is a book about vampires, but take away the paranormal element and the plot holds up as an intriguing tale of tension and testosterone. A top class read for anybody who enjoys a good read.

5 ***** Perfect!

These books only seem to build momentum as they go along! I loved reading Blood Master – Sam, the main character of the past two books finds herself in the midst of a more unsavoury type of vampire than she’s used to. Forced to choose a blood slave and undergo training to turn her into an assassin, can she ever find her way back to her friends and escape Jason – the proclaimed Master of law within the vampire world…

New book trailer!

Book1.indd Seduction (small) paino_change-2Rogue House is proud to present the new book trailer of The Shape Shifter series! This series has taken us all by surprise as it was supposed to be for young adult readers and yet we receive emails and messages from readers from all ages. It is not as fast paced as the other series by Jennifer Loiske as this story holds so many layers in it and it may take time to catch the message in them. But if you’re looking for a heartbreaking love story with strong characters and a real message in it, this series might be just for you.

The Shape Shifter series trailer can be found here. Share as much as you like!

What readers say about The Shape Shifter series:

5 ***** “Welcome to the wilds, where everything is not as it seems to be. This excellent tale of hidden cultures and secret societies deals with something that we all feel: there is something wrong with our world.

Whilst aimed at the YA market, adults will similarly enjoy this tale of alienation as it asks a very important question; what if there is a reason for feeling like you don’t fit in? What if there is a reason for feeling like you don’t belong?” (M. Sockel)

5***** “FINALLY! There is a shape shifter book that doesn’t involve vampires! Whoop! What’s more it sticks to the true fable of shape shifters and their abilities to transform into more than just one facet. Even the love triangle Ms Loiske included was well written, real and messy and complicated, not one of those whiny twilight teenage relationships. (In saying that I’m team Gunward all the way though…)The plot continued along at a good pace and the character development was thick and heavy – just the way I like it.” (Ali)

5***** “With a new world to adventure in, lovable characters, romance, and a bit of mystery, Imminence has a something to please every. This book was a fantastic read that ended on a cliff-hanger, making me want to read the second book ASAP. Although this book is directed towards the YA bracket, I do believe that most people of older ages would enjoy this story also.” (Marie)

Lucas

Lucas final coverLUCAS (age 18 and up readers)

Part Two of Immortal Blood Series.

Revenge.

It can either destroy you or save you.

He was a ruthless killer who’d killed so many people he had forgotten their faces. She was still a newbie and knew squat about killing, but she was prepared to protect the ones she loved no matter what the cost. When his hands encircled her neck and his fangs pierced her soft flesh, he almost forgot his task. She didn’t. She knew what she had to do to stop him. Even if she had to pay for it with her life…

Excerpt:

I knew by experience that the best way to get what I wanted was to be patient and wait for them to do something stupid. Something I was witnessing right now.

Suddenly, Sam marched out of the room. I stepped back, hiding myself, and not a minute too soon. Only a couple of seconds later she opened the front door and glanced angrily behind her, but since no one was following her she decided to slam the door as hard as she could and get out of the house. A slow smile spread over my face.

She headed to the park and I took off after her.

The moon was high and was shedding light across the narrow path. I could hear her muttering angrily and saw the dirt she kicked up whilst walking. Suddenly, she stopped and turned fiercely. I stopped, too, staying as still as I could. She cocked her head to one side, her eyes scanning the area. I held my breath. She harrumphed, slowly turned her back on me, and started to walk, much slower than before, to the nearest bench.

Great. Now I was stuck, frozen in the middle of the path, and could only hope we were the only ones enjoying the fun. Sam lifted her feet onto the bench, hugged her knees, and pressed her head onto them. She sobbed once. A dirty word almost slipped from my mouth. Was she crying? ’Cause if she was, I was so out of there. Crying girls and me were not a good match. She sobbed again and I moved an inch, hoping she wouldn’t hear me. She didn’t and I moved a little more.

Her head popped up. “Hello?” She looked around nervously.

A gust of wind rattled the trees and made the leaves on the ground dance. I saw my chance and slipped behind a large bush. Her eyes caught my shadow and she jumped up, revealing her canines. I didn’t move an inch. Her eyes moved systematically from bush to bush, tree to tree, but otherwise she was just as still as I was. The wind blew again and she sniffed. My lips curved up. There was no way she could’ve caught my scent, as I was standing upwind, and I could smell a hint of her perfume quite well. I licked my lips, and as if she sensed it, her heart raced frantically. She licked her lips, too, but as nothing happened she decided she was just imagining things and started to walk again. I seized the moment.

I slowly counted to ten in my mind, put my earphones on, and started to jog. She must’ve heard my steps and that I was getting closer, but she kept walking and kicking small stones angrily. My steady steps were not threatening in any way. Just a lonely jogger in a park. Nothing out of the ordinary. Yet a normal girl would’ve panicked at this point, especially after the suspicious moment minutes ago, but not her. She knew she could take any human attacker down, so why bother to be scared. I was only six feet away and I wanted to laugh out loud. Turn around, I mentally urged her, but she stared stubbornly ahead. I did the only thing I could to get her attention. I bumped into her. Hard. She stumbled and turned fiercely.

“What the f―” The words died on her lips as her eyes met mine.

I grinned cockily. She stared at me like I was a fallen angel. My bright green eyes flashed in amusement as her eyes wandered from my eyes to my lips. She inhaled sharply and I couldn’t help a corner of my lips twitching. She pressed her hand to her mouth and then reached out to me as if she needed to touch my ruffled dark-brown, almost black hair that hung just above my broad shoulders. I stood stiffly like a statue and let her examine me. Once I had been smug about my looks, but now it was just the way things were. I knew I looked exactly the same as twenty-two years ago. Okay, not exactly, ’cause becoming a vampire had highlighted my almost perfect features, and even though I looked like a twentyish-year-old boy, I was a man now.

She drew her hand away and shook her head as the reality started to reach her brain.

“Hi.” I smiled and took the plugs out of my ears.

“Hi.” She smiled back and I knew for sure that this would be the answer to all my prayers. She was obviously the weakest link, and getting close to her would get me closer to whoever killed my brother and help me to get my revenge.

I forced a concerned look into my eyes. “Sorry I bumped into you. I didn’t mean to, but I was lost in my thoughts and didn’t expect anyone to be here this late.” I smiled boyishly.

She hesitated and took a step back. “It’s okay. You’re not a serial killer or something are you?”

I shook my head. If only she knew.

“’Cause I’m not any helpless chick you can easily knock down,” she continued.

“No worries. I’m a perfect gentleman.”

She grinned and I grinned back. Okay, I was so not a gentleman, and I think she knew it, too, but she couldn’t resist the wicked gleam in my eyes.

I held out my hand. “Lucas.”

She glanced behind her as if to make sure she was close enough to the house if I jumped on her. “Sam,” she said but didn’t take my hand.

What readers say about Lucas:

***** Author Jennifer Loiske gives us ‘Lucas’, the second novel in the ‘Immortal Blood’ series. Having read and reviewed the first in series, ‘Club Number Five’ it is time for me to admit I do not really have a penchant for vampire stories. There, I said it. Moreover, although having admitted my predisposition, I have now to confess that Author Loiske has, through her great writing of her first novel ‘Club…’, and now ‘Lucas’, won me over. By about Chapter 19 of ‘Lucas’ I was really appreciating a great read. From the First Person of both antagonists and protagonists, if you can figure out whom the ‘Goodies’ and the ‘Baddies’ are, you have guessed as much through a lot of great writing. It is Five-Stars for the writing, storytelling and for persuading this reader to consider, then appreciate a different genre… I do not think it an easy accomplishment for most authors. Well done.

***** Jennifer has a gift for making her genre readable by readers of other genre. As a middle-aged man, I read very few vampire novels, but bad-assed assassin Lucas was a very believable baddie … for me, I had a picture in my head of James Dean. As for the mother-of-all-bad-asses Jason, when I first read his name, I had a picture in my head of a sweet ten-year-old boy who played for my son’s football team many years ago (he was the only Jason I know), but that image was soon crushed as the ultimate villain left me in the same cold sweat as leading lady Sam. As always, Jennifer captures her readers with the romantic intrigue that locks together her fascinating characters. A top-class book. Looking forward to the third in the series.

***** You don’t necessarily need to have read the first book in the series to understand or enjoy this story, although I can’t imagine why anyone would not want to start from the beginning. You would be missing out on a good book if you skipped Club Number 5 and only started with Lucas. Plus, there are things that happen in the first book that resurface in the second. Although Jennifer briefly mentions the past, you’ll want to know all the details. Trust me, they are good!

I enjoyed reading Lucas as much as the first book in the series and can’t wait to read the next book in line. I am now addicted and I am sure that you will be too.

I wish I could say more, but I would just end up ruining the surprise. No fun keeping it all to myself, so start reading!!!

***** The writing is smooth and slick with a definite urgency. It didn’t seem like anyone was going to rest until Lucas would find his brothers killer. From the first page you are taken into a place where vampires and killing are a normal occurrence. I read with vigor wanting to know where this paranormal story was going to lead me. I was pretty much glued to it until I finished the last page. This suspenseful story was unique and the cast of characters lured me.

If you are a fan of vampire books you will love this series. The first two are both well done and a fun escape into the unknown.

“I found myself at the club again. It was becoming a bad habit and I should do something about it. People had started to notice me and that was bad. Soon they’d start talking, and it was only a matter of time before I’d find myself surrounded by unwanted company. Yeah, I had that kind of reaction wherever I went. Only a few had met a man with a tattoo like mine and even fewer were alive to talk about it, but word traveled and I hadn’t exactly hidden my legendary mark.”

***** “Lucas” was an amazing and exciting read. I loved it just as much as I love “Club Number Five.” I read the book in one sitting; it is definitely hard to put it down once you start reading it. Lucas wants revenge for the death of his brother and in order to find out exactly how his brother was killed he needs to get into Kate, Sam, Dane and Jonathans circle. He needs someone to focus on and he chooses Sam. His sire warns him not to touch Sam but certain events happen and Lucas does the one thing his isn’t supposed to do. Revenge is sweet and Lucas will stop at nothing to get it but in the process he lets his desire for Sam cloud his judgment and it ends up costing him in the end. Everyone believes the saying an eye for an eye and no one would have guessed the Jason was behind the whole thing. He had his eye on the prize and he’s determined to make it his one way or another. I cannot wait for the next book in the series. I look forward to see what will happen with Dane, Sam and Jason. I highly recommend this book to anyone who read and love “Club Number Five,” and if you haven’t read this series yet I highly suggest pick it up; you will absolutely love it.

Excerpt:

HOME

By Marie Godley

The village laid out below me was familiar, yet confusing. The streets, some with terrace housing, others with individual cottages, ran in straight lines, radiating out from the village green; but in my mind I kept seeing track-ways and houses with enclosures holding animals, clustered together.

I turned away from the view as the sound of voices floating up the stairs caused me a stab of irritation. I’d come up here for some peace and quiet, figuring I was the only one likely to stand on top of the church tower in windy weather. I briefly considered slamming the door at the top of the staircase shut; I could do it too – with one wave of my hand – but I didn’t, those days were long gone.

A stout woman in tweeds and brogues erupted through the doorway, followed more slowly by her companion; a red faced man whose moustache seemed to be quivering as he fought to get his breath back.

“Come along Arnold,” she said brusquely.

Her voice grated down to my inner core and I stood still, hoping she would ignore me; I was to be disappointed.

“Oh it’s magnificent isn’t it?” she shouted above the wind, addressing me despite my lack of eye contact.

I grunted.

“Imagine – St Michael’s has been here for three hundred years,” she informed me.

Why she wasn’t telling Arnold this I couldn’t imagine, I walked away.

“How rude!” I heard her exhale heavily as she moaned to her companion.

I didn’t care; about her or the church. I only climbed up to the tower because it was the highest point in Whitehaven. St Michael’s hadn’t always been here. I had stood on this same spot six hundred years ago; only then I’d been standing on the battlements of Haven Castle and the surrounding village had been a few scattered buildings.

I turned to descend the spiral stone staircase, my visit shortened by the addition of people in my vicinity. Why was it so hard to find somewhere without anyone about?

“Morning.”

I acknowledged the vicar’s greeting with a nod of my head but kept walking towards the door.

“What is his story?” I heard the vicar ask Mrs. Hettle, the lady who did the flowers. “He often comes to climb the tower but I’ve never seen him so much as glance around the church, let alone take part in any of the services.” I assume he thought I wouldn’t hear him. He was wrong.

I wondered what Mrs Hettle would tell him as I passed through the entrance. Would it be the rumour that I had moved here to be closer to relatives that wanted nothing to do with me? I bet it wouldn’t be the story of how I was an elemental wizard who was 700 years old. How I’d been all over the world; witnessed some breathtaking miracles of nature and some nasty things I would rather forget.

And my family wanted nothing to do with me.

Part Three of The Shape Shifter Series

Tiamhaidh stood like a rock next to Marie, surrounded by at least sixty shape shifters. Sofia could feel the hatred radiating from them and she was ashamed. Is this how things were nowadays? Where were the hospitable hellos and their manners? Shouldn’t they at least hear them out before judging them? She glanced around but couldn’t see one single friendly face anywhere. What had happened that her old pack had totally turned their backs on her? You happened, her conscience reminded her bitterly. Everywhere she looked she met icy stares and angry faces, and not a single one of them were ready to back away.

Excerpt:

Tiamhaidh stood like a rock next to Marie, surrounded by at least sixty shape shifters. Sofia could feel the hatred radiating from them and she was ashamed. Is this how things were nowadays? Where were the hospitable hellos and their manners? Shouldn’t they at least hear them out before judging them? Tiamhaidh was part of the pack and Marie was his promised one ‒ no one could deny that ‒ so they shouldn’t be treated like enemies.

Sofia leaped out of the car and had to use her elbows to get to Marie and Tiamhaidh. No one moved and gave way, so she didn’t spare the hits when her elbow met their bodies, but even her rough punches didn’t make the crowd move. She saw Gavin behind Tiamhaidh. His teeth were revealed, but the look in his eyes was hopeless. He knew as well as she did that they were way outnumbered and it was only a matter of time before the silent hatred changed into action. Erag was gone, which was no surprise, as he was probably stoking the bonfire somewhere nearby and rubbing his hands in satisfaction, Sofia thought bitterly. But what surprised her the most was that she couldn’t see one single friendly face anywhere. What had happened that her old pack had totally turned their backs on her? You happened, her conscience reminded her bitterly, but she quickly smothered the voice. She glanced round and snapped angrily, “Dé th’ann? Is this how you welcome your guests?”

The pack grunted quietly, but no one spoke to her. She felt the pack tighten and she was filled with disbelief and rage. She could hear them inside her head and she wanted to puke. She had brought her child here. Not to judge but to heal. And she had honestly believed that at least some of them wanted to help her. Sure, she had known some might hate her and her child. But this hatred was different. They wanted to destroy Marie because they thought she was some kind of freak and didn’t deserve to live. Their actions resembled an unfair trial, and what shocked her the most was the unity. If some of them were curious about Marie or disagreed with this weird harassment, they hid it pretty well, as she felt no hesitation among them. Just pure cold hatred.

She tried to evaluate the situation, but Marie’s fate seemed hopeless. Everywhere she looked she met icy stares and angry faces, and not a single one of them was ready to back away. On the contrary, they stood, shoulder to shoulder, ready to fight for the slightest reason. She squeezed her fists closed and bared her teeth. No one reacted and she growled. They growled back. Their eyes were burning and she could smell adrenaline from them. Not good. Fine. If they wanted to fight she would fight. Straightening her back, she let them see the fire inside her and that there was no question about how far she was willing to go. If anyone so much as moved towards Marie, she would rip their throat open without a second thought.

Anger flashed in her eyes and her body commanded her to shift, but she couldn’t. For some reason, most of the shape shifters had chosen to meet Marie in their human form, and that was her pack’s advantage. If she changed now the others would, too, and that would be the end of Marie and David. No way could they survive an attack of angry wolves. She let her gaze fall on each of the surrounding faces in turn and tried to force them to back away. Nothing happened. Their eyes remained on her and her pack. She clenched her jaw. She could probably take ten or fifteen down and Tiamhaidh over twenty. But that was about it. Someone had to cover for David, and that someone would probably be Daniel. Gavin couldn’t deal with more than five, so they had no chance of winning. Right now she really missed Adam and his dirty way of fighting.

She knew she should talk to them. Convince them that they were no threat to them. But she was so tired. And besides, they didn’t look as if they were ready to listen. They wanted blood. Her blood and her family’s blood. Shoot! This had been their last hope and, come to think of it, it now seemed ridiculous. These shape shifters couldn’t help them. And even if they could, she was sure they wouldn’t. They had come to see Marie, the freak human. And yes, they had also come to see David. A man who had stolen one of their females. How stupid was that. David hadn’t done anything wrong. She had chosen him. She had fallen in love with him first and the bottom line was he had never stolen anything from anyone. He was innocent and so was Marie. That didn’t matter, though. They had already judged them. Had she chosen the wrong path? Maybe, but she stood behind her decisions, and now her child was going to pay for it.

“You’re not welcome here!” someone yelled from the crowd. “You’re a traitor!”

“Who said that?” Sofia yelled back, but no one answered.

Anger grew in her mind and she felt the power gathering in her. All right then. They had obviously made their choice and fight it would be. She knew she had only one shot, but she would use it well. She wouldn’t let them hurt Marie and David. This was her fight and she would take full responsibility for her choices. She had chosen a human over an immortal one, and she would never regret that. So maybe this was the time to find out how strong her powers really were. Everyone seemed to think she was special and that she had more powers than any of them. Everyone except herself. So maybe they would all discover something new today.

She cleared her mind. She thought about the water she had just seen. She opened her mind to the powers and prepared herself. She would make these low-minded creatures regret the day they were born. They would crawl at her feet and beg for her forgiveness, and if ‒ and that was a really big if ‒ she decided to let them go, she would exile them from this valley. They would have to face the real world. And who would laugh then? They would have to open their eyes and learn to live among the people they despised so much. Yes, they were stronger than humans, but without the pack they would just be strangers who were scared and lonely in a strange world. Soon they would know what real power was and they would tremble before her. She felt the power tingling in her fingers and she smiled cruelly.
